What is Podiatry?

Podiatry is an Allied Health Profession that specialises in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of complications in the foot and lower limb. It is a more universally recognised term than the older, more well-known term, chiropody.

A Podiatrist is trained at degree level which includes over 1000 hours of clinical work. To practice as a Podiatrist in the UK, they must be registered with the HCPC.

Routine Podiatry/Chiropody

Routine Podiatry is the term given to general foot conditions and preventative footcare. Including;

  • Athletes foot
  • Corns
  • Callus
  • Cracked heels
  • Fungal nail infection
  • General nailcare
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Thickened nails
  • Verrucae

Biomechanic assessment

Biomechanical imbalance can be the cause of various symptoms in the feet and lower limbs. Such as;

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel pain
  • Mortons neuroma
  • Bunions
  • Tendonitis
  • Flat feet/fallen arches

A full history of your biomechanical issue will be taken. Assessment of the affected & surrounding area and observation of your gait may be carried out. Treatment may involve provision of orthotics* and /or exercises to improve your condition.

*Please note orthotics are NOT included in the appointment fee

Diabetic/Neurovascular assessment

It is important to look after your feet if you have diabetes or a history of vascular (circulation) problems. A diabetic foot assessment is important in order to monitor any changes in the blood flow and sensation to your feet. The assessment involves testing the sensation, blood supply, reflexes and skin integrity. It includes a summary report that can be sent to your GP.

Who is The Roaming Podiatrist?

Vikki studied Podiatry at the University of Huddersfield gaining a first class BSc (Hons) degree. She is registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and is a member of the Royal College of Podiatry. Vikki worked as an NHS Occupational Therapist for 10 years before taking time out from work to raise her two sons. Due to missing working in healthcare, and due to having had her own foot problems since childhood, Podiatry felt like a natural career move for her.

Vikki is kind and caring in nature and endeavours to put her patient at ease whilst helping to improve their foot health, whether from routine nail cutting or corn removal to improve comfort, or by providing advice and ongoing assessment and treatment for diabetic patients.

As well as providing Podiatry services within your home, she is experienced in working in private clinics and provides routine podiatry for a championship football club.

What Clients say about the Roaming Podiatrist

Covid-19

From January 26th 2022 it is no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask. Considering appointments are carried out within your own home it is not compulsory for you to wear a mask during your appointment. However, in order to protect both yourself and the Podiatrist, wearing of a mask or visor is strongly advised. Due to the nature of podiatry treatments the Podiatrist will continue to wear a mask and PPE for all visits and a high standard of infection control measures will be maintained at all times.

Ventilation is effective in reducing the risk of spreading covid-19 so if you feel able, please open a window prior to and during your appointment.

Please cancel your appointment if you or another member of your household:

  • Have had a positive test for the covid 19 virus in the last 7 days
  • Are awaiting test results as you have symptoms of covid-19
  • Have a continuous cough, high temperature or a change or loss in taste and smell
